Worship with Dance

The Hebrew Miserlu

This is a traditional dance. We don't know the choreographer. Note that the Hebrew Miserlu is for four-count music, whereas the Greek Miserlu is for three-count (waltz tempo) music.

The entire dance is done without holding hands.

Each numbered step takes two beats of music.

  1. (facing inward) {hands at sides} Sidestep R, pause
  2. (facing inward) {hands at sides} Point L toe in air crossing in front of right foot, pause
  3. (facing inward) {hands at sides} Step L foot behind right foot, sidestep R foot to the right
  4. (facing inward) {hands sway, at sides} Sway L, twist on L foot so hips face LLOD but shoulders still face inward
  5. (facing LLOD) {hands raised to head height} Step forward with R foot, bring L foot up to right foot
  6. (facing LLOD) {hands stay raised} Step forward with R foot, pause with L foot slightly raised
  7. (facing LLOD) {hands stay raised} Step backward with L foot, bring R foot back to right foot
  8. (facing LLOD) {hands stay raised} Step backward with L foot, pause (prepared to pivot to face inward with the "Sidestep R" that follows)
A less common variation has the entire dance done facing inward and holding hands. The "cha cha" steps are then replaced by what is nicknamed "mayim lifts".

  1. Sidestep R, pause
  2. Point L toe in air crossing in front of right foot, pause
  3. Step L foot behind right foot, sidestep R foot to the right
  4. Sway L, twist on L foot so hips face LLOD but shoulders still face inward
  5. Cross R foot past left foot in front, sidestep L
  6. Cross R foot past left foot in back, hold L foot in the air with bent knee
  7. Cross L foot past right foot in front, sidestep R
  8. Cross L foot past right foot in back, hold R foot in the air with bent knee
